P5 - Yorkshire Co-operative Resource Centre

Education, Training and Information
Co-operatives provide education and training for their members, elected representatives, managers, and employees so they can contribute effectively to the development of their co-operatives. They inform the general public - particularly young people and opinion leaders - about the nature and benefits of co-operation. (Principle 5 of the International Statement of Co-operative Identity) www.ica.coop

Purposes and Aims

  • Protect and safeguard the books, publications, archival materials and resources placed in trust for the use of the co-operative movement and for future generations.
  • Make these available to all members who would wish to use them.
  • Support the development of co-operative education and culture.
  • Work co-operatively with other organisations and individuals who have compatible aims.
  • Seek support from the wider co-operative movement.
  • Be as true as possible to the ICA Statement of Co-operative Identity (Values and Principles).

Principle 5 Yorkshire Co-operative Resource Centre, Aizlewood's Mill, Nursery Street, Sheffield, S3 8GG

Principle Five (YCRC) is an information hub for the Co-operative Movement in the Region and a friendly and accessible place where anyone can learn more about the Co-operative Movement.

It is based at Aizlewood's Mill, Sheffield - a co-operatively owned building and home of the Sheffield Co-operative Development Group.

This collection of co-operative educational and research resources began with a realisation of the immense value of back editions of The Co-operative News. Back and current editions will always be available for reading.

In keeping with the co-operative principle of Openness and providing information; reports of co-operative societies, and in particular the Co-operative Group are available in the centre, both current and historic. The Co-operative Group, Co-operatives UK and other societies publish many pamphlets, these are always available to visitors to the Centre. The Centre has back editions of the Journal of Co-operative Studies.

The Co-operative Review, Co-operative Gazette and The Millgate Monthly and a good deal of additional archive material both national and local will be of interest to co-operative historians.

The lending library will be of particular interest. It started with 25 books, but thanks to the generosity of the East of England Co-operative Society, the centre now has a substantial library for the use of members and researchers.

Principle 5 YCRC is a member of Co-operative Press, Co-operatives UK, Sheffield Co-operative Development Group and The UK Society for Co-operative Studies
